KCSO says no to govt’s compensation, ask for justice

Guwahati: The Konyak Civil Society Organization (KCSO) refused to accept the ex-gratia from the government and asked to deliver justice to all the 14 victims, including the survivors and family members of the Oting firing incident.

Earlier the Central government and the state government announced ex-gratia of Rs 16 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh to the kin of the slain and injured civilians respectively after the December 4 firing by the security forces that left 14 civilians killed and 30 others injured in Mon district of northern Nagaland.

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) such as the Konyak Union, Oting Village Council, Konyak Students’ Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khung, and other leaders urged the media separately that all security officials involved in the shooting event should be punished promptly. They also requested that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 be repealed immediately (AFSPA).

Civil society organizations urged in separate declarations that a location be set aside to create a monolith in honour of the victims.

They stated that the site would be used as a “Genocide Park” to honour the 14 innocent lives lost.

The CSOs cautioned that if their demand for a site was not satisfied as soon as possible, the Konyaks would be forced to take drastic measures.

CSOs have been holding commemorative and protest events around Nagaland, notably in the capital city of Kohima, since December 4.

On Monday, a candlelight march will be held across communities in the Mon district in partnership with Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjum as part of this programme (KBBB).

On December 16, there will be a big public rally, and a reminder of the preceding memorandum will be submitted to the Indian government through the state government.

Last week, the Nagaland administration announced that a special session of the Assembly will be held on December 20 to examine and pass a resolution repealing the AFSPA.

Meanwhile, the state government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was formed to investigate the December 4 incident, has asked anyone with information on the incident to contact it.
