Kheroni Charali’s ‘Highway to Hell’ Poses Peril for West Karbi Anglong Residents
Guwahati: The main thoroughfare connecting Diphu and Hamren, a crucial artery for thousands of people, has crumbled into a treacherous stretch, leaving residents in West Karbi Anglong fuming. At Kheroni Charali, barely a stone’s throw from the Assistant Executive Engineer (PWD) office, the road has transformed into a patchwork of craters and rough terrain.
This isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it’s a daily ordeal for students, farmers, traders, and government employees, who depend on this single major link to connect Donkamokam—the home of KAAC Chief Tuliram Ronghang—and the district headquarters in Hamren to the rest of the region.
Despite its strategic importance and its location right on the border of two MAC constituencies—Amreng and Kapili—the road has been ignored for months, according to frustrated locals. They point to the disrepair that has long plagued the vital route, noting that neither the Public Works Department nor their elected representatives, Pawan Kumar and Rina Terangpi, have lifted a finger to address the issue. The danger became acutely clear recently when an oil tanker overturned at the spot, an incident that not only created traffic chaos but also worsened the road’s already abysmal condition.
For those who navigate this perilous path every day, the struggle is real. Students are late for school, farmers face challenges getting their produce to market, and traders are counting their losses due to rising transport costs. The problem only intensifies during the monsoon, when rain turns the road into a waterlogged, slippery death trap. The growing frustration is palpable. A local trader, who relies on the road to transport goods, voiced the community’s anguish. “The condition of this road is a daily nightmare for us,” he said. “Students and farmers are struggling, and yet no one seems to care. The officials and representatives are sleeping while we suffer.”
The consensus among locals is that the failure to repair the road, despite its proximity to the PWD office, points to gross indifference and poor governance. They are now appealing to the KAAC, the PWD, and their elected representatives to urgently prioritize repairs and restore safe, reliable connectivity for the entire district.
