Kidnapping-Murder Case In Guwahati, 6 Held

Guwahati: The kidnapping and murder of a young man in the city led to the arrest of the video editor of a Guwahati-based news portal along with five other people. The commissioner of police Diganta Barah informed the public of this on Monday.

In his remarks to a press conference, Barah mentioned the kidnapping of Biswajit Hazarika who was abducted on the evening of October 9 of last year as he was riding a rickshaw back to his house.

The abductors demanded a ransom of Rs. 40 lakhs in exchange for the victim’s release and sent a video of Biswajit.

Barah said, “No information was available about the location of Biswajit.”

An unidentified body was discovered in Assam’s Nellie area on November 1 after a month and it was eventually identified to be Biswajit’s.

Following the incident, the victim’s parents demanded an investigation by the police commissioner and the arrest of the suspects who they believed were responsible for their son’s murder on February 9.

Six people were then arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder case when the police began an investigation.

The accused have been identified as video editor of a news portal Debajit Deka, Ajay Kalita, Pranab Ranghang, Sanjay Kumar Phagat, Paresh Chetri and Mayur Nath.

The main mastermind behind the case was Ajay kalita, a resident of Panjabari.

Barah said, “We came to know about the information based on confession made by Pranab who confessed that they kidnapped the victim to make easy money.”
