Kiren Rijiju Clarifies Waqf Amendment Bill, Stresses Welfare-Oriented Management
National: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, on February 15, highlighted that India has the highest number of Waqf properties in the world and emphasized the need to ensure their benefits reach the common people.
Addressing concerns over the Waqf Amendment Bill, Rijiju dismissed allegations that the legislation was against the Muslim community, calling such claims misconceptions.
• Rijiju stated that many Muslim families in India are not wealthy and should be able to avail the benefits of Waqf properties.
• He stressed that if these properties are not being used for public welfare, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their proper management.
• Clarifying the legal stance, he reiterated that India follows constitutional principles, and neither the government nor any individual can tamper with Waqf properties.
The minister’s statement comes amid ongoing debates over the proposed amendments, with the government maintaining that the bill aims to streamline Waqf property management rather than target any specific community.
