Kohima District Enforces Complete Ban on Forest Burning Amid Rising Fire Incidents

Kohima, Nagaland – In response to a notable increase in forest fire incidents, the Kohima district administration has declared a complete prohibition on the burning of forests within its jurisdiction. The directive, issued by Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem, underscores the significant role of both intentional and unintentional burning in the escalation of these destructive fires.

The Deputy Commissioner’s order explicitly points out the detrimental consequences of these fires, including the destruction of vital wildlife habitats, damage to public assets, and the creation of severe threats to the safety and lives of residents.

Citing legal authority under Section 162 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the DC has classified such burning activities as a public nuisance that disrupts peace and presents an immediate danger to both life and property. This reiterates a pre-existing ban, now emphasized for rigorous adherence.

The order serves as a stern warning, stating that any individual or group found to be in violation of this directive will be subject to legal action. Prosecution will be pursued under the relevant sections of the BNSS, the Nagaland Forest Act of 1968, and the Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland, 1937.
