Kolkata Police Held Garga Chatterjee After GHC Order

Guwahati: The Kolkata Police apprehended Garga Chatterjee and brought him before the court following a directive from the Gauhati High Court.

Swargadeo Sukapha, who established the Ahom empire in Assam over 800 years ago, was the target of some objectionable comments made by the commentator, Garga Chatterjee.

However, the court granted him bail under the condition that he appear in person on September 17 at Kamrup Metro Chief Judicial Magistrate court.

In October 2020, the Crime Branch of the Assam Police filed a complaint against the commentator. Later, an attorney by the name of Banashree Gogoi filed a petition in the High Court on the matter.

The West Bengal Chief Secretary and the Kolkata Commissioner of Police were given six weeks to respond after the case was heard by Justice Suman Shyam on June 15.

The attorney for the Assam Government had earlier informed the court that two separate non-bailable arrest warrants had been issued by a lower court in Guwahati for the commentator and another person in West Bengal. However, the West Bengal police’s unwillingness to cooperate prevented them from being put to death.
