Konyak Students’ Union Suspends Agitation as Nagaland Government Reviews Teachers’ Rationalization
Kohima: The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has announced a temporary suspension of its protest following the Nagaland government’s decision to put the controversial teachers’ rationalization process on hold.
The Directorate of School Education, Nagaland, in a recent directive, stated that the February 6 and 10, 2025, orders on teacher rationalization will be suspended until further review, citing public service concerns.
In response to this development, the KSU has halted its planned agitation against both the government and the Department of School Education. The union had previously criticized the rationalization policy, arguing that it was politically motivated and harmful to the education system.
The KSU first raised its objections in August 2022, when it submitted a letter to the Commissioner & Secretary of School Education, demanding a comprehensive assessment before implementing the restructuring. The union expressed deep concern over primary schools being left with only one teacher, as well as unreplaced teacher transfers, which severely affected students’ education.
Describing the policy as arbitrary and detrimental, the KSU had also urged the government in January 2025 to appoint six Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) at Government Higher Secondary School-C (GHSS-C) before February 10, 2025. However, with no action taken, the union was preparing for *stronger measures before the government’s latest decision led to a pause in their protests.
While the suspension of the orders marks a potential shift in the government’s stance, it remains to be seen whether the concerns raised by the Konyak Students’ Union will be fully addressed in the upcoming review process.
