Kuki-Zo Council to Present Unified Political Roadmap at May 16 Dialogue in Guwahati
Churachandpur — In a landmark move aimed at solidifying the political aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people, the Kuki-Zo Council’s (KZC) Governing Council has resolved to present a unified position on the formation of a popular government during a high-level meeting with Kuki-Zo MLAs and Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups scheduled for May 16, 2025, in Guwahati.
The decision was taken during the KZC’s first-ever Governing Council meeting held at the READS Auditorium in Rengkai, Churachandpur. The meeting followed a key consultation between Kuki-Zo community leaders and top functionaries from the United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO) on May 12 in Kangpokpi.
At the heart of the deliberations was the reaffirmation of the Kuki-Zo community’s demand for a separate administration under Article 239A of the Constitution, mirroring the Union Territory model of Puducherry. The meeting, attended by 90 delegates from multiple tribes and civil society organisations, marks a watershed moment in the community’s bid for political self-determination.
Key Resolutions Passed:
1. Cabinet Expansion: Approval of four new Vice-Chairpersons, Joint Secretaries, and Assistant Secretaries, bolstering the Council’s executive structure.
2. Budget Framework: Drafting of a comprehensive financial plan, with an emphasis on equitable contributions from all constituent units.
3. Guiding Principles Reaffirmed: The Council reviewed and retained its core principles without changes, underscoring internal consensus.
4. Popular Government Deliberation: A collective decision to formally convey the Kuki-Zo community’s stand on the formation of a popular government during the May 16 Guwahati meeting.
Chief Coordinator Ch. Ajang Khongsai guided the strategic direction of the session, with proceedings recorded by KZC Spokesperson Ginza Vualzong.
In a powerful address, KZC Chairman Henlianthang urged the Kuki-Zo people to remain united amid external provocations. “The Kuki-Zo people have remained resilient despite adversity. We are steadfast in our pursuit of a political future through a separate administration under Article 239A,” he declared.
The upcoming Guwahati dialogue is seen as a critical step in formalising the community’s political roadmap amid the ongoing ethnic and administrative crisis in Manipur.
