Kurmi Offers Repeated Apologies Amidst Expulsion Demands

Guwahati: In a dramatic turn within the Assam Legislative Assembly, BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi has declared his willingness to apologize repeatedly, stating he would do so “a hundred more times if necessary.” This declaration follows intense demands from opposition MLAs for his expulsion, stemming from controversial remarks he made against them.

The controversy ignited on Saturday, when Kurmi’s statements during a session were deemed highly objectionable by the opposition, triggering a wave of protests within the Assembly. Opposition members have since escalated their demands, calling for Kurmi’s immediate expulsion, citing his alleged misconduct as a breach of legislative decorum.

Despite the escalating pressure, Kurmi has remained defiant, asserting his right to remain within the Assembly. He emphasized his status as an elected representative, stating unequivocally that “no one can bar him from the House.” His stance underscores a firm refusal to be ousted, even amidst mounting criticism.

“I don’t care what others say or do,” Kurmi reiterated, maintaining that he had already offered apologies and saw no merit in prolonging the issue. He conveyed a sense of finality, suggesting that the matter should be considered closed after his repeated attempts at reconciliation.

Kurmi also revealed that he had consulted with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the situation. According to Kurmi, the Chief Minister advised him on the importance of serving the people with a “cold mind,” indicating a call for composure and continued focus on public duty amidst the ongoing controversy.
