Lachen Cut Off: Indian Army Mounts Herculean Rescue in North Sikkim
Gangtok: The tranquil valleys of North Sikkim’s Lachen have been rocked by an unprecedented calamity, as relentless downpours triggered colossal landslides, completely severing the popular hill station from the rest of the state.
In a display of unwavering grit and resolve, the Indian Army has spearheaded a full-scale rescue and relief operation, battling treacherous weather and an unforgiving landscape to bring succour to stranded tourists and local residents.
Despite the incessant rain and the daunting terrain, Indian Army jawans are toiling round the clock, their efforts focused on reaching those marooned by the natural disaster. With all roads leading to Lachen obliterated by massive landslslips, and the region plunged into darkness due to widespread power outages, the situation remains precarious. However, the Army’s relentless push has managed to re-establish foot access to the town, a critical breakthrough enabling rescue teams to finally reach the isolated populace.
Official figures indicate that approximately 113 tourists, including a significant number of women and children, are currently stranded in Lachen. Demonstrating remarkable swiftness, 30 individuals have already been airlifted to safety by helicopters. The Indian Air Force is providing crucial air support and transport, playing a vital role in these high-stakes evacuation efforts, which will continue as soon as weather conditions permit.
Beyond the immediate evacuations, Army rescue teams are actively distributing essential supplies, including food, water, and medicines, to those affected. Soldiers are also instrumental in establishing temporary shelters and delivering basic medical care. The Indian Army has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to saving every life, pledging to continue its extensive operations until all individuals are brought to safety and normalcy can begin to be restored in the beleaguered region.
