Landslide in Tripura’s South District Claims Seven Lives, Including a Child
Northeast Desk, 22nd August: A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rains claimed the lives of seven people, including a 3-year-old child, in the Gardang area of Tripura’s South District on Wednesday. The landslide buried their house in Ashwini Tripura village under the Gardang Panchayat, part of the Santirbazar sub-division.
The victims, members of two families, were identified as Umacharan Tripura (25), Mandira Tripura (23), Prasenjit Tripura (21), Ajay Tripura (16), Rakesh Tripura (18), Jyotika Tripura (21), and Kumtuisa Tripura (3). Six bodies have been recovered so far, with efforts ongoing to locate the seventh victim.
Local residents, along with authorities, are working tirelessly to recover the remaining body from the debris. Some survivors of the tragedy have sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
One of the injured victims recounted the harrowing incident, stating, “It was late at night when the landslide suddenly occurred. Seven members of my family have died, including three of my sons, one daughter-in-law, my granddaughter, my younger brother, and his wife.”
Tripura has been battling severe weather conditions since August 19, with continuous heavy rainfall causing widespread flooding and triggering nearly 2,000 landslides across the state. The catastrophic weather has claimed a total of 10 lives, adding to the toll taken by this latest tragedy.
