Landslide kills worker at Lower Subansiri hydropower project site at Assam’s Gerukamukh

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, one construction worker was killed and injured two others injured a major landslide on Monday at the under-construction Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric project at Gerukamukh on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

The landslide occurred inside one of the project’s tunnels.

The event occurred while the workers were working for Patel Engineering on a building project.

The deceased has been identified as Jitu Hatibaruah, a resident of Gogamukh in the Dhemaji district.

The two injured workers were sent to Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The catastrophe occurred in August of this year, just as the public sector NHPC was about to commission the 2,000 MW Subansiri hydro project.

Construction work on the ambitious project at Gerukamukh along the Subansiri river was halted from December 2011 to October 14, 2019, due to protests by villagers and several organisations concerned about safety and downstream impact.

The protests were primarily led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP).

Multiple committees were constituted by the Assam government and the Centre to address the agitators’ issues.
