Landslides In Arunachal Cause Connectivity To Snap In Many Areas

Guwahati: A landslide on the Itanagar-Hollongi route near Chimphu has closed a major artery road in the capital Itanagar of Arunachal Pradesh stranding hundreds of vehicles for hours.

The landslide occurred at around 10.30 am on Tuesday.

According to official reports, hundreds of cars and two-wheelers have been stranded as a result of the landslide on both sides of the key road.

Despite the administration’s efforts to clear the debris using personnel and machinery, officials estimate that it will take at least a day or two to reopen the road to traffic.

Landslides have also been common on the National Highway (NH) 415, which was closed for a few hours on Monday. The Itanagar-Hollongi road connects Banderdewa, Naharlagun, and Itanagar and is the state capital’s second major route.

Rainfall has caused landslides and floods in numerous areas of the state during the previous few days, hampering transportation connectivity. Since June 18, four persons have been killed in the state. Since April, landslides and floods have damaged 524 dwellings in 87 communities, affecting a total of 11,000 people, according to the Disaster Management Department.

All deputy commissioners have been ordered to stay alert and ready to respond to any situation that arises. For early warnings, the department also communicates with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Central Water Commission (CWC).
