Lausanne: Tibetans protest against Beijing Games outside Olympic Committee HQ
Guwahati: At least 500 Tibetans on Thursday marched outside the International Olympic Committee headquarters in protest of Beijing’s hosting of the Winter Olympic Games, headed by an activist on skis dragging the Chinese flag behind him.
Protesters in Lausanne held placards that read “Boycott Beijing Winter Olympics,” “Stop human rights crimes in Tibet,” and “Games of Shame,” with many carrying Tibetan flags.
A day before the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Tibetan activists from throughout Europe marched 3 kilometers from the IOC building in Lausanne to the Swiss city’s Olympic Museum.
Demonstrations took place in various cities throughout the world, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Loten Namling, a Tibetan artist who has lived in Switzerland for 32 years, led the procession on skis with the word “freedom” written on them “. “The reason I’m pulling the Chinese flag is that China is responsible for the destruction of my country.” My culture was decimated by China. Allow them to understand how hard it is for us “he stated
Tibetans in exile burned Chinese flags outside the Chinese embassy near Shanti Path in New Delhi during a protest against the Olympics earlier today. Hundreds of Tibetans gathered to protest and pray for a free Tibet, called the “Genocide Games” by human rights advocates.
China refuses to recognise Tibet’s self-proclaimed government-in-exile, accusing exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama of attempting to split Tibet from China.
After China chose Qi Fabao, a soldier who was part of the June 2020 Galwan Valley incident, as one of the torchbearers, Indian diplomats would not attend the ceremony on Friday.
At a press conference on Thursday, MEA spokeswoman Arindam Bagchi remarked, “It is regretful that the Chinese side has chosen to politicise an event like the Olympics.”
