Lava-Pedong Road Secures Rs 338 Crore Boost for Enhanced Connectivity to Sikkim

Gangtok: In a significant move aimed at fortifying regional infrastructure, the central government has allocated Rs 338 crore for the comprehensive widening and upgrading of the Lava-Pedong road.

This crucial artery, which serves as a vital alternative route to Sikkim’s capital, Gangtok, when the primary National Highway 10 faces disruptions, is set for a major overhaul.

The sanctioned project is poised to alleviate persistent traffic congestion and ensure seamless travel between North Bengal and the state of Sikkim.

The initiative has been met with gratitude from Darjeeling Member of Parliament, Raju Bista, who expressed his sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, for their pivotal role in approving the project.

The expansion, to be executed by the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), will transform the existing stretch into a modern two-lane road equipped with paved shoulders, operating under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode. The projected timeline for completion is set at two and a half years.

Residents of Pedong, Lava, and the surrounding regions have long endured substantial hardships, particularly during the monsoon season when NH10, the principal highway to Sikkim, is frequently rendered impassable.

This situation compels a surge of heavy traffic onto the narrower alternative routes, resulting in significant congestion and delays. The newly approved project is anticipated to resolve these long-standing issues, substantially improving connectivity within the Kalimpong district and facilitating a smoother journey to Gangtok.

MP Raju Bista has reassured the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the infrastructure deficits in the region. He emphasized that alongside these developmental projects, the government is equally dedicated to resolving social and political concerns, ensuring the comprehensive welfare of the people.

This expansion along NH-717A will bring about tangible improvements in road conditions, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity between West Bengal and Sikkim, offering substantial benefits to both local commuters and visiting travelers.
