Legal Shield: Empowering Women in Meghalaya’s Khasi Hills
Shillong, Meghalaya: In a significant step towards safeguarding women’s rights, legal experts and community leaders converged at Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The event, organized by the District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, aimed to educate and empower women with knowledge about their legal rights and protection mechanisms.
Legal Aid Counsel P Riahtam delved into the nuances of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, shedding light on maintenance provisions under Section 144 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). A Khongsit, Station Inspector from Sohra Police Station, raised awareness about the growing menace of cyber violence against women and girls, emphasizing the need for digital literacy and legal recourse.
The interactive session that followed witnessed active participation from villagers of Laitmawroh and Ramkheng, demonstrating a burgeoning awareness about women’s rights within the community. By bridging the gap between legal expertise and grassroots engagement, the event underscored the importance of a holistic approach to combating gender-based violence.
