Live-in-Relationships are personal liberty

Guwahati: Live-in relationships are slowly turning into a major trend and despite this being a part of personal liberty, many consider it to be a taboo in Indian society.

With this particular argument going on in the country over the years, the Allahabad High Court while disposing of two separate petitions, said that “live-in relationships have become part and parcel of life and need to be viewed from the lens of personal autonomy rather than notions of social morality.”

A division bench of the court comprising of Justice Pritinker Diwaker and Justice Ashutosh Srivastava stated, “Live-in relationships stand approved by the apex court and should be viewed from the lens of personal autonomy arising out of the right to life and personal liberty as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, rather than notions of social morality.”

The couples who were adults had filed the petition alleging that their families were “interfering in their daily lives”.
