Lok Sabha Adjourned as Winter Session Begins; Opposition Pushes for Discussion on Adani Issue
National: The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 noon on Monday, November 25, shortly after the first day of the 2024 Winter Session commenced. Speaker Om Birla announced the adjournment following a brief start to the proceedings.
As the session began, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to X (formerly Twitter) to reiterate the Opposition’s demand for a detailed discussion on the Adani issue, describing it as a matter of national and international significance. He warned that the controversy could harm India’s global reputation and called for swift government action. “This is what the INDIA bloc parties are demanding today, as the hard-earned investments of millions of retail investors are at stake,” Kharge wrote.
Kharge also criticized the concentration of economic power, stating, “We do not need monopolies and cartels to run this country. What we need is healthy, market-driven competition in the private sector, which fosters equal opportunities, employment, and equitable wealth distribution, reflecting India’s entrepreneurial spirit.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media ahead of the session, taking aim at the Opposition. He accused parties defeated in elections of attempting to disrupt the functioning of Parliament. Modi expressed hope that the session would be productive and serve the interests of the nation.
The winter session is expected to see heated debates, with the INDIA bloc gearing up to challenge the government on a range of issues, including the Adani controversy, inflation, and governance in Manipur.
