Lok Sabha Approves President’s Rule in Manipur Amidst Criticism

Imphal: The Lok Sabha has adopted a statutory resolution confirming the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur, with members from various parties supporting the decision while condemning the Centre for the state’s situation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that the government has taken all necessary steps to restore normalcy in Manipur, highlighting that there has been no violence in the past four months. Shah also mentioned that talks are ongoing with both Meitei and Kuki communities to achieve a peaceful solution.

The home minister attributed the start of ethnic violence in Manipur to an order from the state’s high court, stating that central forces were promptly deployed. Shah noted that 260 people have lost their lives in the violence that began in May 2023, with 80% of the deaths occurring within the first month.

Shah also referenced past clashes between communities in the 1990s, emphasizing that violence is not unique to the current government. He mentioned that neither the then-prime minister nor the then-home minister visited Manipur during those incidents.

Various opposition leaders, including Congress’ Shashi Tharoor, TMC’s Sayani Ghosh, and DMK’s K Kanimozhi, expressed concerns and called for the restoration of peace and stability in Manipur. The resolution was adopted by a voice vote, with the government facing criticism for imposing President’s rule.
