Lok Sabha Passes Landmark Criminal Law Reforms, Replacing Colonial Codes with Focus on Justice

National Desk, 20th December: The Lok Sabha has passed three revised criminal law bills, namely the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, seeking to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the bills, emphasizing their focus on providing justice rather than punishment.

Shah stated that the motive behind the Indian Penal Code was punishment, not justice, and the new criminal law bills aim to shift this paradigm. He highlighted that these bills are in consonance with the spirit of the Constitution, addressing challenges faced by the poor in accessing justice due to financial constraints and delays in the judicial system.

The Home Minister underscored the clarity brought by the new laws, aiming to streamline the process and ensure justice is served. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, 2023, is expected to replace the Indian Penal Code, emphasizing a shift towards a justice-centric approach. The bills were initially introduced during the Monsoon Session, with amended versions tabled during the Winter Session.
