Longte Festival: A Celebration of Peace and Unity in Arunachal Pradesh
Itanagar: The Kurung Kumey district in Arunachal Pradesh, situated near the Indo-China border, recently celebrated the Longte Festival, a unique and ancient tradition of the Nyishi community.
This week-long celebration, held in the Koloriang constituency, was inaugurated with traditional fervor, drawing participants from four circles: Sarli, Damin, Parsiparlo, and Polosang, as well as the district headquarters.
The Longte Festival is an age-old tradition that symbolically wards off evil spirits, ensuring harmony and prosperity in human settlements, livestock, and agricultural fields. This bloodless festival is a distinctive aspect of Nyishi culture, showcasing their rich heritage and reverence for life. Instead of animal sacrifices, altars are adorned with decorative white feathers and bamboo decorations, highlighting the community’s commitment to preserving their unique traditions.
Local MLA and Advisor to the PHED Minister, Pani Taram, emphasized the importance of preserving the original form of Longte, a festival that has stood the test of time and remains a symbol of identity and pride for the Nyishi people. He also clarified that the APFRA Act aims to safeguard the region’s indigenous heritage without targeting any specific community.
Deputy Commissioner Vishakha Yadav highlighted the significance of Longte as a springtime celebration focused on peace, unity, and well-being.
The festivities began with an oath-taking pledge, opening of the traditional Namlo, and a vibrant showcase of indigenous sports. Pani Tare, Chairman of the Longte Festival Committee, urged the community to continue upholding and protecting this precious cultural legacy, inspiring younger generations to embrace and celebrate their roots with pride.
The Longte Festival serves as a powerful reminder of Arunachal’s vibrant cultural fabric, promoting peace, unity, and well-being among its people.
