Lovlina Borgohain, Shiva Thapa In Quest For Gold in Asian Boxing Championship

Guwahati: A total of 12 Indians will compete in the semifinal matches with the goal of securing their spots in the final at the 2022 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan.

According to a press statement from the Boxing Federation of India(BFI), the men’s semi-final matches will begin on Thursday after the women’s semi-final fights on Wednesday .

Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), who won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will compete in this weight division at an international competition for the first time when she competes against Seong Suyeon of the Republic of Korea.

Along with Lovlina, the bronze medalist from the 2022 World Championships Parveen (63 kg) will compete against Uranbileg Shinetsetseg of Mongolia while the tournament rookie Preeti (57 kg) will face off against the gold medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Irie Sena of Japan.

Alfiya Pathan (81+ kg), Saweety (81 kg), Ankushita Boro (75 kg) and Minakshi will be the other four ladies competing in the semifinals (52kg).

Shiva Thapa (63.5 kg), the most decorated Asian Champion in history after winning his sixth medal in the championship will compete against Tajik Bakhodur Usmonov, a two-time medallist at the Asian Championships.

Mohammad Hussamuddin (57 kg), a two-time Commonwealth bronze medallist will compete against Kazakhstan’s Serik Temirzhanov, a 2021 World Championships silver medalist.

The other three men competing in the semifinals are Govind Kumar Sahani, Govind Kumar (92+ kg), and Sumit (75 kg) (48kg).

Narender (92+ kg) easily defeated Iranian opponent Iman Ramezanpourdelavar with a unanimous 5:0 decision late on Monday night to advance to the semifinals.

India finished third among all competing nations in this year’s edition of the prestigious competition with a total of 12 medals.

The nation’s female grapplers have won seven medals, placing them second in the world rankings for women, while the men’s total of five medals puts them tied for third with Jordan and Mongolia in their respective standings.

267 boxers from 27 major boxing nations are taking part in the competition.

The tournament’s finals for the men’s and women’s categories will be held on Saturday and Friday, respectively.
