Madrasa Demolished, This Time By Locals In Assam’s Goalpara

Guwahati: Another madrasa has reportedly demolished by locals in the Goalpara district of Assam on Tuesday, police informed.

Locals allegedly said that two Bangladeshi nationals utilised the location for terrorist purposes, reports said.

Officials informed that the two Bangladeshi nationals, Aminul Islam and Jahangir Alom, are affiliated members of the proscribed Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) outfit.

They claimed that between 2020 and 2022, the purportedly taught at the madrasa.

According to the police, a search is being conducted to find Islam and Alom who are both now evading capture.

Police also said that a residence next to the madrasa in the Pakhiura Char region was also leveled while claiming that no government employees were involved in the demolition.

The madrasa and the house next to it were deliberately destroyed by the villagers out of extreme animosity toward Jihadi activity, according to the authorities.

Meanwhile, a cleric, identified as Jalaluddin Seikh who had hired the two Al Qaeda militants to teach at the madrasa, had been detained last month on suspicion of radicalising young people in Assam.

It should be mentioned that this was the fourth madrasa in the state to be destroyed in the past month due to claims that it harboured Jihadis and had ties to terrorist organisations.

Last month, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Assam has turned into a hub for “Jihadi activity.” He also stated that foreign-born religious instructors at mosques and madrasas in the state will need to register on a government website.
