National Desk, 30th September: In a significant cultural and political move, the Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has officially designated the cow as “Rajya Mata” or the “State Mother.” The announcement, made on Monday, reflects the cow’s revered status in Indian tradition, particularly within Hinduism, where it is considered sacred.
The government’s declaration underscores the cow’s profound spiritual, scientific, and historical importance, highlighting its role in India’s cultural and agricultural heritage. The move, detailed in a government order, aims to address concerns over the declining population of indigenous cow breeds, emphasizing the need for cattle rearers to focus on breeding and preserving native species, given their socio-economic and religious significance.
The reverence for cows in Hinduism is well-known, with cows often viewed as maternal figures. The state government’s statement stressed the importance of cow milk, valued for its nutritional benefits, as well as cow urine and dung, which are integral to traditional healing practices and agricultural use. Cow urine is believed to possess medicinal properties, while cow dung is used to enhance soil fertility, supporting sustainable farming methods.
By promoting the preservation of indigenous breeds, the Maharashtra government aims to boost the agricultural sector while encouraging environmentally sustainable practices. This announcement comes as Maharashtra prepares for state elections, with the current government’s tenure ending on November 26, 2024. Elections are anticipated to take place after the Diwali festival in November, with the model code of conduct likely to be enforced in early October, signaling the beginning of the electoral process.
In preparation for the elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has been coordinating with state authorities to ensure adequate facilities at polling stations. During a recent review meeting with Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and other senior officials, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar emphasized the importance of providing basic amenities such as seating, fans, drinking water, and shelters for voters. The ECI has also assured swift action in response to any complaints of voter inconvenience on election day.
The declaration of the cow as the “State Mother” is seen as a move to garner support from rural and traditional voters, reflecting the government’s efforts to align itself with cultural values ahead of the upcoming elections.
