Maharashtra defeats Assam in Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinal
Guwahati: Despite making a heroic effort, the Assam squad was unsuccessful in Wednesday’s Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final round.
The Assam squad lost by 12 runs when playing one of the best teams in Maharashtra. Assam set a goal of 351 and reached it by scoring 338 runs in 50 overs while losing eight wickets.
Assam’s captain Kunal Saikia declared Maharashtra to bat first after winning the toss. Maharashtra set up a total of 350 for the loss of seven wickets, helped by two century-makers in skipper Rituraj Gaikwad and Ankit Bawne, who made 168 and 110, respectively.
After putting up a fight, Assam was bowled out for 338 runs, falling short by only 12 runs. With 95 runs, Swarupam Purkayastha led all scorers for Assam, followed by Sibsankar Roy (78) and Rishav Das (53).
The Assam team has managed to defeat difficult opponents it faced throughout the competition despite all odds.
Assam advanced to the semifinals by defeating Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Vidarbha, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan earlier in the competition.
