Maharashtra Records First Guillain-Barre Syndrome Fatality Amid Rising Cases in Pune
National: Maharashtra has reported its first fatality due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, with a patient in Solapur succumbing to the illness.
The patient, initially admitted to a private hospital’s ICU on January 18 with symptoms of diarrhea and cold, showed temporary improvement but later developed severe breathing difficulties. He passed away after being readmitted to intensive care.
The alarming surge in GBS cases, particularly in Pune, has heightened concerns among health authorities. Pune has recorded 101 cases to date, with 28 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
Of these, 16 patients are currently on ventilator support, reflecting the severity of the outbreak.
The cases include a wide age range, with symptoms observed in 19 children under nine years old and 23 cases reported among individuals aged 50 to 80.
Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in patient samples, a known trigger for GBS.
Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as efforts continue to manage the outbreak and provide care for affected patients.
