Maithan Alloys to Suspend Operations at Meghalaya Unit Amidst Soaring Power Costs
Guwahati: Maithan Alloys Ltd, a prominent player in the manganese and ferro alloys sector, has announced the indefinite suspension of operations at its Byrnihat facility in Meghalaya, effective August 31. The decision, conveyed in a regulatory filing on Monday, stems from a significant escalation in power costs coupled with prevailing unfavourable market conditions.
The Byrnihat unit, one of three manufacturing facilities operated by Maithan Alloys across India, had contributed 6.12 per cent to the company’s total turnover and 8.16 per cent to its net worth in the fiscal year 2024-25. In the last financial year, the unit recorded a total revenue of Rs 112.17 crore. The company, which specialises in producing alloys crucial for steel manufacturing, also runs plants in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. This closure highlights the growing pressure on industrial units in the region due to rising operational expenditures, particularly electricity tariffs, forcing difficult decisions for sustained viability.
