Major Cannabis Seizure at Assam-Tripura Border as Police Nab Smuggler
Agartala: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Tripura Police successfully intercepted a large consignment of cannabis at the Churaibari Check Post in the North Tripura district during a late-night operation conducted on April 19th.
The seized contraband, weighing a substantial 345 kilograms of dry cannabis, has an estimated black market value of ₹1.03 crore.
The strategic Churaibari Check Post, a crucial entry and exit point along the Assam-Tripura border, became the focal point of the operation following a precise intelligence input received by the law enforcement agency.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police personnel halted a truck at the checkpoint, leading to the discovery of the concealed narcotics.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) for the North District, Jeremia Darlong, the initial inspection of the truck revealed a puppet manufacturing machine.
However, an unmistakable strong odor of dry cannabis emanating from the machine prompted a more detailed examination.
This thorough search led to the dismantling of the machine, revealing a total of 69 packets containing the illicit substance ingeniously hidden within its structure.
The driver of the apprehended truck has been identified as Monita Mohan Jamatia, a 45-year-old resident of Teliamura in the Khowai District.
ASP Darlong stated that during the initial questioning, Jamatia admitted that the illegal consignment was loaded in the Padmabil area of Khowai and was intended to be transported to other states through Assam.
Following the successful seizure and arrest, the Tripura Police have registered a formal case under the appropriate sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Authorities have indicated that a comprehensive investigation is now underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in this intricate drug smuggling network.
