Major Counter-Insurgency Operations in Manipur Yield Arrests, Drugs and Huge Cache of Arms
Imphal: Security forces in Manipur launched a series of coordinated operations on August 28, resulting in the arrest of multiple insurgent cadres, seizure of narcotics and the recovery of a large stockpile of arms and ammunition from several districts.
In one of the major crackdowns, Henkhokai Singson, 32, of Tamenglong district, was apprehended from Mulargao village in Jiribam. Forces seized 22 soap cases of contraband brown sugar, along with a two-wheeler and a mobile phone from his possession.
In Imphal West, police arrested two active members of proscribed outfits: Phanjoubam Rocky Singh, 30, of KCP (PWG), accused of extortion, and Thangjam Dinesh Singh, 19, of KCP (PSC), who was also involved in intimidation and extortion activities. Another cadre of KCP (Taibanganba), Moirangthem Friendship Meitei, 35, was nabbed in Kakching, while a senior KYKL operative, Takhelchangbam Ibohanbi Sharma, 54, was picked up in Imphal East.
The operations also led to a string of significant arms recoveries. In Bishnupur’s Phubala Patton Mamang area, security personnel seized an SLR rifle, a .303 rifle, SBBL and DBBL guns, along with a mine bomb. In Jiribam, forces recovered five country-made SBBL guns, 33 AK live rounds, gunpowder vials, a walkie-talkie, and iron rods used for gunpowder filling. A major recovery was also made at the foothills of Uran-Chiru in Imphal East, where three INSAS rifles, an AK-56, two Ghatak AK-47s, an SLR, an MP5 rifle, and more than 230 rounds of live ammunition were discovered.
Alongside counter-insurgency action, Manipur Police intensified its crackdown on traffic violations. On Thursday alone, 56 challans amounting to Rs 1.2 lakh were issued, while tinted films were removed from four vehicles the previous day.
Officials said the coordinated crackdown highlights the determination of state police and security forces to tackle insurgency networks, dismantle drug trafficking chains and tighten law enforcement across Manipur.
