Major Seizure of Fake Currency Worth Rs 10 Lakhs in Guwahati

Guwahati, 29th August: In a significant breakthrough, law enforcement officials successfully confiscated approximately Rs 10 lakhs worth of counterfeit Indian currency notes (FICN) during a collaborative operation in Guwahati.

Garchuk Police, in conjunction with a Special Operations Group (SOG) team, executed a meticulously planned operation within the Lokhra vicinity of Guwahati. This operation resulted in the confiscation of a substantial quantity of fraudulent currency notes.

City officials have noted an alarming surge in the activities of counterfeit currency traders, intensifying concerns surrounding the proliferation of fake notes within the urban landscape.

During the operation, law enforcement personnel seized a total of 20 bundles of counterfeit Rs 500 notes, which cumulatively amounted to nearly Rs 10 lakhs. The successful operation also culminated in the apprehension of two individuals involved in the smuggling of counterfeit currency.

The individuals arrested have been identified as Sariful Islam, also known as Bhuyan and Sajadul Islam. Notably, Sariful Islam had a prior criminal record and was already on the police’s radar for his involvement in cases related to the smuggling of gold and counterfeit notes.

Hailing from Gohain colony in Lakhimpur’s Bihpuria, the duo had arrived in Guwahati a mere three days prior to their apprehension. Their modus operandi included utilizing Uber cabs to commute between Hatigaon and Lokhra, where they engaged with potential buyers.

In a noteworthy seizure, authorities also confiscated multiple mobile phones and 10 SIM cards from each of the detained smugglers, underscoring the extent of their illicit operations.
