Majuli By-polls: BJP’s Bhuban Gam Leading

Guwahati: As the counting for the Majuli by-polls begins, all eyes are on the ruling BJP candidate Bhuban Gam, who leads Chittaranjan Basumatary of the Assam Jatiya Parishad by 32,129 votes.

The 15th round of vote counting began at 8 am on Thursday, and the final result will be announced after the 15th round.

Bhuban Gam, the BJP’s nominee, is expected to have an easy ride, according to political observers.

Following the resignation of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on September 27, an election to the constituency was required.

In 2016 and 2021, the former Chief Minister was elected to the state legislature from the Majuli electorate for two consecutive terms.

According to Election Commission reports, Chittaranjan Basumatary received 11,695 votes, while Bhaity Richong of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) received 995 votes as of 12:30 PM.
