Mallikarjun Kharge Slams Modi Government Over President’s Rule in Manipur
Imphal: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur. Criticizing the move, Kharge called it a direct admission of the BJP’s failure in governing the northeastern state.
In a post on X, Kharge termed the development a “constitutional crisis,” alleging that BJP MLAs were unwilling to bear the burden of their own government’s incompetence. He pointed out that despite ruling at the Centre for 11 years and governing Manipur for eight years, the BJP had failed to maintain law and order, ultimately leading to the suspension of its own government.
Accusing the BJP of abandoning the people of Manipur, Kharge stated that the ruling party had no choice but to impose President’s Rule because none of its legislators wanted to take responsibility for the crisis. Taking a dig at the BJP’s ‘double engine’ governance model, he remarked that the so-called efficiency of having the same party in power at both state and central levels had “run over the lives of innocent people” in Manipur.
Kharge also demanded that Prime Minister Modi visit Manipur and personally address the concerns of the people suffering due to the prolonged ethnic violence and political instability. “Do you have the courage of conviction to listen to their pain and apologise?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, security has been intensified in Imphal following the imposition of President’s Rule, as the region continues to grapple with unrest. The move came after former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, marking the culmination of nearly two years of political and ethnic turmoil in Manipur.
