Man Arrested After Girlfriend’s Brutal Murder in Meghalaya Market

Shillong: In a shocking incident that has sent ripples of outrage across Meghalaya’s Eastern West Khasi Hills district, a 25-year-old man was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly slitting his girlfriend’s throat in front of her own father. The horrific act unfolded on Monday evening in the bustling market of Mairang Pyndengumiong village.

The victim, identified as Phyrnailin Kharsyntiew, a resident of Mawkhap village, was at the market with her father, selling their farm produce, when the accused reportedly approached them. According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, a heated argument ensued between the couple before the man, in a sudden and brutal move, attacked her.

“All of a sudden, the man slit the throat of her girlfriend. The woman was immediately taken to Mairang Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her dead,” a senior police officer stated. The quick actions of locals prevented the accused from fleeing the scene; they managed to apprehend him and subsequently handed him over to the authorities.

While the police have registered a case and initiated an investigation, preliminary findings suggest a personal dispute as the motive. The victim’s father reportedly informed the police that his daughter had expressed her desire to end the relationship, which may have angered the accused. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with residents demanding swift justice for the deceased.
