Man Beaten to Death Over Suspicion of Child Lifter in Assam’s Dhemaji

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a man was brutally killed by a mob on Dehemaji district of Assam on suspicion of kidnapping children on Wednesday night.

The man, who was in his 30s and was mentally ill, was allegedly attacked and assaulted on Wednesday night by a number of people of the Jonai village of Rakut Koke.

The victim’s identity remained a secret.

“We got information around 7:30pm that a mob was assaulting a person. When the police team reached the area, the person had already sustained severe injuries and was unconscious. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead,” said Dhemaji’s deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) AT Doley.

According to reports, the deceased took a child from a mother’s lap before the mother raised an alarm. A sizable mob gathered and began hitting the man as soon as they heard the woman’s pleas.

“The preliminary investigation established that the subject had been mentally unwell for the previous 15 years. He may have failed to provide any suitable answers when the mob began grilling him, which infuriated them. This was a mob lynching, according to Doley.

Seven villagers have been taken into custody by police for interrogation after a murder case was reported.

More research is being done.

The past five days have seen a small number of mob attacks on people suspected of kidnapping children, according to the police.

A similar incident occurred on Wednesday in the same district of Silapathar when a mob attacked an elderly man. He was fortunately saved by a police squad.
