Man from Guwahati gets 25-yr jail term for sexually abusing minor

Guwahati, 1st October: In yet another significant achievement, the Special Court (POCSO) Kamrup (Metropolitan) has handed down a 25-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to Naren Deka from Guwahati in connection with a sexual assault case. Additionally, a fine of Rs 5,000 has been imposed on him.

The accused, previously arrested for sexually abusing a three-year-old girl under Fatasil-Ambari Police Station Case No. 239/2022, faced charges under Section 376(2)(f)(i) IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act.

This case was initiated on November 9, 2022, and following the completion of the investigation, the Charge Sheet was submitted to the Special Court on November 29, 2022. Sub-inspector Ritupon Gogoi, the second officer of Fatasil-Ambari PS (now promoted to the rank of Inspector), served as the investigating officer in this case.

Furthermore, it has been conveyed by Guwahati Police through the X platform that the accused may face an additional three months of simple imprisonment in default of paying the fine.

In a separate incident, the Special Court (POCSO), Kamrup (Metro), convicted a private tutor residing in Sankardev Housing Society in Guwahati’s Jalukbari area, sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. A fine of up to Rs 20,000 has also been imposed.

This case stemmed from an incident reported on October 8, 2018, with the charge sheet being submitted upon the completion of the investigation. The accused, Manish Sikdar, son of Manmohan Sikdar, could potentially face Simple Imprisonment for an additional three months if he defaults on paying the fine, as per Guwahati police’s announcement on the X platform.

The investigation for this case was conducted by WSI Nilima Boro of Jalukbari PS, who is presently posted in SB, Kahilipara. The FIR was lodged by UTSAH, an NGO dedicated to child rights. The victim in this case was a 12-year-old boy, and the perpetrator of the sexual abuse was the victim’s tutor, as per the information provided by the Guwahati police.
