Man Harasses IAS Officer Over Confidential Info, FIR Filed

Guwahati: An anonymous person is accused of harassing an IAS officer by pretending to be a government official on WhatsApp with the goal of obtaining “sensitive information” from her, according to a complaint made on Tuesday.

This was informed by the Delhi Police on Thursday.

Earlier last week, the national capital received the complaint.

IAS officer Garima Gupta reportedly filed a complaint with the Delhi Police two days ago, stating that someone had threatened and harassed her while pretending to be a government representative and attempted to obtain sensitive information about her department.

According to the filed FIR, the accused responded that he was using a SIM card with fake identification, making it impossible for the police to find him when Gupta approached him and warned him of a police report.

The said person also tried to impersonate as a senior government official when he talked to her. This person keeps on changing his assumed name on WhatsApp in an attempt to impersonate someone else in order to cheat the person he calls, the FIR added.

The IAS officer has further in her FIR urged the police to book her complaint under section 66D (Punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act, along with sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 467 ( Forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged [document or electronic record]), 473 (Making or possessing counterfeit seal, etc, with intent to commit forgery punishable otherwise), and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, according to the police, the incident has been initially reported as a crime under sections 660, 84 C of the IT Act, and sections 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 of the IPC.
