Manali’s Peaks Conquered: Sikkim EMRS Students Scale New Heights
Gangtok: Ten intrepid students from Sikkim’s Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) have returned home, their spirits high and skills sharpened, after successfully completing a rigorous month-long Basic Mountaineering Course at the prestigious Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) in Manali, Himachal Pradesh. This expedition was a significant part of a nationwide endeavour dedicated to fostering resilience, physical prowess, and crucial life skills among tribal youth.
The intensive training, held from May 13 to June 7, was a collaborative effort between the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) and ABVIMAS. Over 50 students from various EMRS institutions across the nation participated, with the Sikkim contingent comprising 10 bright students accompanied by a dedicated teacher escort.
In a remarkable feat that brought immense pride to the state, Tsheteez Limboo, a Class XII student from the Sikkim contingent, was honoured with the coveted ‘Best Student’ award across the entire batch. This outstanding recognition not only highlighted Tsheteez’s individual brilliance but also cast a national spotlight on the exemplary performance of the Sikkim team.
The comprehensive course immersed the students in essential mountaineering disciplines, including rock climbing, intricate rope work, vital survival techniques, and challenging high-altitude trekking. Specifically designed to push the boundaries of both physical endurance and mental fortitude, the programme encouraged students to surpass their personal limits and cultivate robust teamwork in demanding environmental conditions.
This year’s participation marks the third consecutive occasion that EMRS Sikkim has dispatched students for this impactful mountaineering programme, solidifying a consistent trend of strong performance and sustained engagement from the school.
The triumphant students arrived back in Sikkim on June 10. Officials from the state’s Social Welfare Department lauded their remarkable achievement, recognising it as a promising illustration of how precisely targeted educational initiatives can effectively empower tribal youth, instilling in them greater confidence, adaptability, and broader aspirations for their future.
