Manipal Hospitals Unlocks Specialised OPD Services in Aizawl, Boosting North-East Healthcare Access
Aizawl: Manipal Hospitals, a prominent healthcare provider, on Sunday, May 25th, announced a significant expansion of its reach into the North-Eastern region, initiating regular outpatient department (OPD) services in a collaborative effort with Aizawl Civil Hospital. This strategic partnership is poised to bring advanced medical expertise closer to the doorstep of Mumbaikars, addressing a critical need for specialised care in the geographically diverse region.
Dr. Kaushik Biswas, Senior Consultant in General Medicine and Endocrinology at Manipal Hospitals, addressed a press conference in the state capital, elaborating on the breadth of services to be offered. The initiative will zero in on crucial medical disciplines including cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, oncology, nephrology, and endocrinology, essentially creating a multi-specialty hub within Aizawl Civil Hospital.
Dr. Biswas underscored the escalating prevalence of chronic lifestyle diseases across the North-Eastern states, with Mizoram seeing a notable surge in conditions like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, and various metabolic syndromes. He articulated Manipal Hospitals’ commitment: “Through our regular OPDs and strategic collaboration with local healthcare institutions, we aim to bring quality endocrine and general medical care closer to the people of Mizoram.” This move is expected to significantly ease the burden on patients who previously had to travel considerable distances for specialised consultations.
Adding to the discussion, Dr. Debraj Jash, Director of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Manipal Hospitals, highlighted the growing concern over respiratory ailments in the region. He pointed to the increasing incidence of conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, interstitial lung disease, and a range of post-infectious complications.
Dr. Jash also acknowledged the unique geographical challenges inherent to Mizoram, which often pose significant barriers to timely access to specialised treatment. “In a state like Mizoram, where geographic challenges can hinder timely access to specialised treatment, our outreach efforts have played a pivotal role in bridging healthcare gaps,” he stated. He further added, “We have facilitated access to specialized pulmonary consultations and diagnostics for hundreds of patients within the state. With the rollout of regular OPDs, lung function screenings, and integrated care programmes, we are committed to expanding these critical services.” This initiative marks a crucial step towards ensuring comprehensive and accessible healthcare for the populace of Mizoram and the broader North-Eastern region.
