Manipur: 20-Year-Old Woman Dies by Suicide in Imphal West Relief Camp
Imphal: A young woman, Sukham Chanu Devi, tragically died by suicide on January 7 at a relief camp in Imphal West. Chanu, aged 20 and originally from Singhat in Churachandpur district, had been residing at the Mekola Higher Secondary School relief camp with her husband and two other family members.
Chanu, who had been married for just four months to Sukham James, was discovered hanging near her bed around 4:15 p.m. while her husband was away at work. The incident has left the relief camp community in shock, highlighting the mental and emotional toll faced by displaced individuals in such precarious living conditions.
Police officials confirmed that her body has been sent to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at Nambol police station, and investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death.
The tragic incident underscores the immense strain experienced by families living in relief camps, many of whom have been displaced due to ongoing violence and unrest in the region.
