Manipur: 80k Opium Poppy Plants Destroyed By Security Forces

Guwahati: Assam Rifles destroyed 80,000 Opium Poppy plants that had been planted on 1.25 acres of forest land in the Longpi village hill range in the Nungba sub-division of Manipur’s Noney district.

Based on specific information on the large poppy plantation in the Hill Range of Longpi village, the operation was jointly carried out by Manipur Police and the state’s forest department along with Assam Rifles.

According to an official statement, the operation was a part of its anti-drug move and the poppy plants are expected to be worth roughly Rs 10 lakh.

“Srikona Battalion of Headquarter 21 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarter Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) destroyed large scale cultivation of Poppy plants at Longpi village Hill Ranges in Nungba Sub Division of Noney district in Manipur on 20 January 2023,” the statement read.

The statement further said that the party also destroyed 80,000 Opium Poppy plants that were planted on 1.25 acres of forest land and cost over Rs. 10 lakhs.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Police are looking into the matter.
