Manipur: Arms and Explosives Seized in Churachandpur District
Northeast Desk, 25th February: The Manipur Police have successfully recovered a significant cache of arms and explosives during search operations conducted in two villages situated in Churachandpur district.
Security forces conducted a thorough search operation on Saturday, resulting in the seizure of four firearms, one improvised long-range heavy mortar, and ammunition from the outskirts of D Haolenjang village, according to a police statement. Additionally, fake currency notes totaling Rs 1,200 in face value were confiscated from the same location.
In a separate search operation conducted in Moljang village, Churachandpur, a police team discovered 10 guns, eight gelatin sticks, and ammunition, as detailed in a statement issued by the police control room.
Furthermore, in a distinct operation, three individuals were apprehended from Keisampat junction in Imphal West district after two SLR rifles were recovered from their possession, an officer confirmed. A case has been registered against them, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
Amidst these developments, Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May of the previous year, resulting in over 180 fatalities. The unrest commenced on May 3 following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meiteis, constituting approximately 53% of Manipur’s population and predominantly residing in the Imphal Valley, have been at odds with the tribals, comprising Nagas and Kukis, who account for around 40% of the population and primarily inhabit the hill districts.
