Manipur: Assam Rifles Destroys 354 Acres of Illegal Poppy Cultivation in 2024

Imphal: Continuing its proactive operations against illegal poppy cultivation, the Assam Rifles has eradicated 354 acres of poppy fields along the Indo-Myanmar border in 2024.

These operations, focused in Ukhrul, Churachandpur, and Chandel districts, were carried out with the collaboration of the Manipur Police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), district administration, and other stakeholders.

According to a press release by HQ IGAR (South), these efforts reflect the Assam Rifles’ ongoing commitment to combating the narco-trade and ensuring stability in Manipur. The force has achieved consistent progress in curbing poppy cultivation in recent years:
• 2020: Identified 8,057 acres, destroyed 1,695 acres.
• 2021: Identified 5,610 acres, destroyed 1,976 acres.
• 2022: Identified 494 acres, destroyed 715 acres, including hidden patches.
• 2023: Identified 1,735 acres, destroyed 1,488 acres.

By 2024, the significant decline in identified poppy fields is attributed to the Assam Rifles’ rigorous operations and the joint strategy of state and central governments.

Advanced Technology and Community Support

To tackle the challenges of inaccessible terrains, the Assam Rifles has employed drone surveillance and relied on actionable intelligence from local communities and civil society organizations. This combination of technology and community engagement has enhanced the force’s precision in identifying and eliminating illegal cultivation.

As part of its “Drug-Free Manipur” initiative, Assam Rifles has conducted extensive awareness drives to educate communities about the dangers of drug addiction and the risks of poppy farming. These efforts aim to address the socio-economic factors driving illegal cultivation, promoting sustainable alternatives and long-term solutions.

With its multi-pronged approach, the Assam Rifles continues to play a crucial role in dismantling the narco-trade while fostering security and development in the region.
