Manipur Athletes Sushila Chanu and Roshibina Devi Nominated for 2023 Arjuna Award

Northeast Desk, 14th December: Manipur’s sports prowess shines as hockey player Sushila Chanu and Wushu athlete Roshibina Devi from the northeastern state secure nominations for the prestigious 2023 Arjuna Award.

The Arjuna Award recognizes athletes for consistent international-level performances over four years, coupled with qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and discipline.

These two outstanding athletes join a list of 15 others, including cricketer Mohammed Shami, nominated for the Arjuna Award.

In a parallel celebration of excellence, men’s doubles badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are reportedly chosen for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Manipur has a storied history of producing Arjuna awardees in weightlifting, boxing, hockey, judo, and more.

Notable recipients like N. Kunjarani Devi, Ng. Dingku Singh, and M.C. Mary Kom have not only brought glory to Manipur but also served as inspirational figures.

Manipur, known for its significant contribution to Indian sports, has produced 19 Olympians across five sports.

The state’s athletes have not only represented the nation on global stages but have also played pivotal roles in securing medals for India at the Olympics.

As we await the official announcement of the 2023 Arjuna Award recipients, the nomination of Sushila Chanu and Roshibina Devi underlines the dedication and perseverance of Manipur’s athletes, upholding the rich sporting legacy of their homeland.
