Manipur: Attack on Ratha Yatra Chariot in Imphal Sparks Security Concerns

Northeast Desk, 5th July: Unknown armed miscreants launched an attack on a chariot being prepared for the upcoming Ratha Yatra festival in Imphal, Manipur, in the early hours of July 5. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am near the crossing of Sana Konung.

According to eyewitnesses, the miscreants arrived in a car from the direction of Advance Hospital, fired two rounds at the parked chariot, and swiftly fled towards Palace Gate. Imphal East police responded promptly to the scene upon receiving alerts and initiated investigations to apprehend the assailants.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, stirring concerns amidst ongoing social and political tensions in the region. The incident coincides with public debate on social media regarding the feasibility of celebrating the Ratha Yatra festival, scheduled for July 8, under current circumstances.

Last year, citing similar concerns, the Ratha Yatra was observed on a reduced scale, with ceremonial rituals held while the traditional procession was cancelled. Authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance in anticipation of further developments as the festival approaches.

Local residents and religious leaders have expressed dismay over the incident, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to safeguard cultural and religious festivities in the region.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing as authorities strive to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of upcoming religious observances in Imphal.
