Manipur: BJP Manipur Spokesperson’s Family Home Attacked Amid Rising Tensions

Northeast Desk, August 31, 2024 — The spokesperson for BJP Manipur Pradesh has expressed deep anguish after the third attack on his parents’ residence in Peniel village, Churachandpur. In a post on social media platform X, the spokesperson accused “ultra Kuki supremacists and extremist groups” of carrying out the assault.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting the spokesperson’s family. A similar attack occurred on August 25, when armed miscreants targeted the same residence. The escalating violence has raised concerns about the safety of political figures and their families amidst ongoing unrest in Manipur.

Despite the repeated attacks, the BJP spokesperson reaffirmed his commitment to justice, truth, and non-violence. He emphasized that his actions should not be conflated with those of his parents or other family members, stating, “I will not stop to stand for justice, truth, and non-violence.”

The attack on the spokesperson’s family home follows a period of heightened tension in Manipur, particularly after three MLAs, including those advocating for a separate administration within the state, called for their tribes to be recognized by their correct names rather than being collectively identified as “Kuki-Zo.”

In a previous statement, the spokesperson had called for prayers and solidarity for the Thadou community, highlighting the need for unity and peace during these challenging times. “We are lifting our prayers and many are standing with us in prayer for the Thadou community,” he shared.

The ongoing violence underscores the deepening divisions in the region, with political and ethnic tensions continuing to escalate.
