Manipur BJP MLA Calls for New Leadership Amid President’s Rule

Imphal: Amid ongoing political uncertainty in Manipur, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar has urged party leadership to appoint a new leader in the state Assembly and form a new government at the earliest.

His appeal comes days after the imposition of President’s Rule on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with BJP state president A Sharda Devi on February 20, Shyamkumar emphasized the urgency of resolving the political crisis.

He called upon both central and state BJP functionaries to expedite the selection of a new chief minister, stressing that the party has the necessary legislative strength to form a government.

Manipur was placed under President’s Rule despite the BJP enjoying a strong majority in the Assembly, a move that Shyamkumar termed “unfortunate.” He warned that if the situation prolongs and the Assembly is dissolved, some legislators might consider resigning.

However, he refrained from suggesting any specific candidate for the chief minister’s post, stating that the decision should be left to the party’s leadership.

The state assembly, which remains under suspended animation, was elected for a term lasting until 2027. Biren Singh, who had led the BJP government since 2017, stepped down after nearly 21 months of ethnic violence that has claimed over 250 lives.

The demand for a new leadership highlights the ongoing political instability, with BJP leaders now under pressure to restore governance in the strife-torn state.
