Manipur: Bodies of Kuki-Zo Members Airlifted from Imphal Morgue, Tribal Body Urges Shutdown in Honour
Northeast Desk, 14th December: The Joint Philanthropic Organisation (JPO), representing the Manipur tribal community, has officially confirmed the airlifting of bodies belonging to Kuki-Zo members from the Imphal morgue on December 14. These bodies, which have been at the morgue since the outbreak of violence in May 2023, have been transported to the Motbung LS ground in Kangpokpi District.
In an effort to honor the deceased, the tribal body has issued a call for a symbolic shutdown. The request includes the closure of shops, vendors, vehicles, and other business establishments, starting from 2:00 pm today. The gesture aims to pay respects to the lives lost during the period of unrest.
Reports indicate that 41 bodies will be sent to Churachanpur, and 19 bodies will be directed to Kangpokpi district. The violence, stemming from a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in May 2023 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, has resulted in more than 180 casualties.
Manipur’s demographic composition includes the Meiteis, accounting for around 53% of the population and residing predominantly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% and are primarily located in the hill districts. The aftermath of the unrest continues to shape the sociopolitical landscape in the region.
