Manipur Bolsters Security: IEDs Recovered, Militants Apprehended in Ongoing Crackdown

Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have significantly ramped up their operations against insurgency and extortion, leading to a series of key recoveries and arrests over the past week. The concerted efforts underscore the state’s resolve to bring peace and stability to the region.

Between May 23 and June 2, a crucial breakthrough saw the recovery of three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and four crude grenades. These dangerous devices were unearthed along the track from Yangoubung to Lalim Lok River in Tengnoupal district, highlighting the persistent security threats faced by the state.

Parallel to these frontline operations, Manipur Police have been relentless in their state-wide combing and cordon-and-search drives. These intensive efforts are a direct response to the enduring challenge posed by extortion and insurgency-related activities, which continue to disrupt public order.

In a dedicated move to enhance road safety, June 1 witnessed a special vehicle enforcement drive. During this initiative, police actively targeted vehicles with tinted glasses, successfully removing them from six cars found in violation of established safety norms. This highlights the authorities’ commitment to upholding stringent safety standards for commuters.

The Manipur Police have firmly reiterated their unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order across the state. They have assured the public that counter-insurgency operations will continue unabated, with the clear objective of curbing the activities of banned outfits and diminishing the influence of militant groups. A police spokesperson affirmed this resolve, stating, “Manipur Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and said that counter-insurgency operations will continue across the state.”

A significant success in these operations came on June 2, with the apprehension of three active militants linked to the proscribed outfits PREPAK (Pro) and KYKL. Coordinated efforts in Kakching and Thoubal districts led to these crucial arrests. Mayanglambam Lorens Singh, a 31-year-old PREPAK (Pro) cadre, was taken into custody for allegedly using GPay to collect extortion money, from whom a mobile handset was seized. “Police said he was involved in collecting extortion money via GPay.”

Further bolstering the crackdown, Shagolshem Thoiba Singh, 23, was apprehended in Thoubal district. He is suspected of being involved in issuing monetary threats and extortion demands, with a mobile phone and a SIM card recovered from him. “He was reportedly involved in issuing monetary threats and extortion demands.”

Another operative, Sapam Boboy Singh, 36, was arrested under the Khongjom police station. He is suspected of being involved in both extortion activities and the recruitment of new cadres for the KYKL. “He was allegedly involved in both extortion and recruitment of new cadres.” Two mobile phones and a SIM card were seized during his arrest.

The continuous and coordinated operations by the Manipur Police and security forces unmistakably demonstrate their sharpened focus on tackling the twin challenges of extortion and insurgency in the region. This sustained commitment is a clear indication of ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security in Manipur, even as the state continues to navigate complex challenges posed by various militant groups.
