Manipur Braces for Shutdown as Kuki-Zomi Groups Mark Two Years Since Violence Erupted

Imphal: Two prominent student organizations representing the Kuki-Zomi community have announced a widespread shutdown across several districts of Manipur on May 3rd.

The Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) are jointly calling for the closure of all educational institutions and business establishments to commemorate the second anniversary of the devastating ethnic violence that engulfed the region in May 2023. Their appeal emphasizes the need for silent observance on this poignant day.

The ethnic conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has resulted in a tragic loss of over 250 lives and the displacement of thousands of individuals.

The prolonged unrest led to significant political upheaval, including the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the subsequent imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

Consequently, the Manipur legislative assembly, with its term extending until 2027, is currently under suspended animation.

In addition to the shutdown, the ZSF and KSO are urging residents to display black flags at their residences as a symbol of mourning. They have also organized a mass prayer at the Martyrs’ cemetery and a public gathering at the wall of remembrance in Churachandpur district headquarters, encouraging widespread participation from the community.

Separately, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) had previously declared May 3rd as “Separation Day.” The ITLF views the day as a period for solemn mourning and deep reflection on the profound impact of the ethnic conflict on the Kuki-Zo communities. Their planned observances include prayers, messages of support for victims and their families, keynote addresses, and speeches delivered by various tribal leaders.

Meanwhile, in the Imphal valley, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a prominent Meitei civil society organization, has also called for a complete suspension of all activities on May 3rd. COCOMI is organizing a significant public convention at the Khuman Lampak stadium to engage in crucial deliberations regarding the future trajectory of Manipur.

Adding to these calls for observance, the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) has announced that May 3rd will be marked as a “solemn day of remembrance and solidarity.” Their chosen theme for the day is “Bridging Divides for Shared Future,” underscoring the urgent need for reconciliation and unity in the aftermath of the conflict.
