Imphal: Manipur is finally witnessing a significant reprieve from the incessant downpour and widespread flooding that gripped the state since May 31. Water levels in all major rivers have steadily receded, bringing much-needed relief to the beleaguered populace. This improvement is expected to streamline ongoing relief operations and facilitate a faster return to normalcy.
The valiant efforts of the Assam Rifles and Army, under ‘Operation Jalrahat-II’, have been instrumental in mitigating the crisis. Their rescue and relief operations are continuing across the state, reaching even the remotest corners to provide immediate assistance and alleviate the suffering of the affected communities. These sustained efforts have been a lifeline for thousands grappling with the aftermath of the deluge.
The floods had wreaked havoc, impacting over 1.65 lakh individuals and damaging approximately 35,242 houses. The Imphal, Kongba, and Nambul rivers had breached their embankments at multiple points, compounding the already grim situation and posing significant challenges for rescue teams navigating the inundated areas.
Despite the monumental challenges, rescue missions have successfully evacuated 4,097 people, who are now sheltered in 78 relief camps. These camps are providing essential provisions and a safe haven for those displaced by the calamity, a testament to the coordinated efforts between rescue personnel and local authorities.
However, the tragedy of the floods was underscored by the loss of a 57-year-old man in Imphal West district on Tuesday, swept away by a swollen river. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the severe flooding and the critical need for continued vigilance.
The agricultural sector has also borne the brunt of the heavy rains, with crops across 115.59 hectares severely damaged. This considerable loss is anticipated to have a lasting impact on the local economy, particularly affecting farming communities who rely on these crops for their sustenance. The state government is expected to formulate measures to support these affected farmers in the coming weeks.
Officials are urging continued caution as weather patterns remain unpredictable. Relief operations will persist until the situation fully stabilises, with authorities meticulously monitoring weather forecasts to pre-empt any further changes that could affect ongoing efforts. As Manipur slowly recovers from this natural disaster, the collective focus remains on rebuilding lives and restoring stability, a monumental task that hinges on the ongoing cooperation between the military, local authorities, and the resilient communities themselves.
